Biography
A sensitive, technical and musical drummer, Uirá Nogueira de
Barros Cairo began his professional career at the age of 16
playing in Bahia rhythm band in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia.
He started playing drums at the age of twelve. His first tutor
was drummer Zeca Metal, who taught him his first rock
moves. In 1995 he moved to Belo Horizonte, where he studied
with José Luiz, André “Limão”, Jean Dolabella, Mário Castelo,
Leo Píres and others, playing in the Minas Gerais music scene
for five years. In Belo Horizonte, he began his career as a
teacher, as well as playing in Samba, Rock'n Roll and Pop
Rock bands.
In Salvador, he graduated in Music Education from the Federal

University of Bahia (UFBA) in 2006, and then moved to
London, where he specialized in drums at the Drum Tech
School (now the BIMM Institute). For five years he was
present on the Brazilian and English music scenes with
various artists from all over the world, such as the band
Saravah Soul, singer Carlos Lyra, composer and singer Marcos
Valle and Geraldo Azevedo. He had the opportunity to perform
at renowned London venues such as Ronney Scott's, Jazz
Cafe Camden and Charley Wrights.
On his return to Brazil, he began teaching at the Federal
University of Bahia. Currently a music teacher on the Popular
Music course at the UFBA School of Music, Uirá is responsible
for teaching the Drums Instrument, where he has dedicated
himself to teaching Brazilian rhythms, mainly Samba, Baião,
Frevo, Maracatu and Samba-Reggae. As well as drums, he has
taught Topics in Technology Applied to Music and coordinates
the EMUS Drumming Workshop in one of the college's
extension projects with around thirty students.
He received his Master's Degree in Music Education in 2015
with the theme “Interactions in the Teaching and Learning
Relationships of Group Drumming” from UFBA and is the
current Coordinator of the Popular Music Course.
Still in the educational field, he runs the
Uirá Nogueira Drumming Course, which has been running for
ten years
